Online Learning Connects Saint Lucia To The World!

There's no denying the power of technology when it comes to education in this modern world, especially on small islands like Saint Lucia, where the onset of the internet and development of wifi has caused an ongoing revolution for the past twenty-five years. The more wireless the world has become, the more connected we seem to be with our global neighbours, so that studying online now offers a viable option for many young people and their families.

Take for example, our young friend Mikella, who found edX when she was 15 and never looked back.

According to its blog, edX is "the trusted platform for education and learning. Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is home to more than 20 million learners, the majority of top-ranked universities in the world and industry-leading companies. As a global nonprofit, edX is transforming traditional education, removing the barriers of cost, location and access."

The youngest learner in the 2018-19 program, Mikella received 99.5% on the HarvardX Data Science Professional Certificate program which was the highest score in the world. Since posting her qualifications on a popular business platform, she has already received some amazing job offers.

But how easy is it to complete high school via the internet? Mikella has a very balanced attitude to her online studies.

"I would definitely tell new students to simply have fun," she says. "edX is such an amazing learning platform. Some courses may be challenging but that is the fun about it. Do not worry too much about what you get in your exams, just make sure that you fully understand the concept that is being taught."

Our island is also home to the International School Saint Lucia (ISSL), which is affiliated to the Canadian education system and offers a high school diploma from New Brunswick Ministry of Education. Fully-approved by the local government since 2006, ISSL offers students in their final two years the opportunity to select courses and learn online alongside their Canuck contemporaries, posting assignments in private drop-boxes while receiving classroom support when needed.

These online education options lead to qualifications accepted by universities and professional organisations across the globe, which strongly emphasises how small our world has become now the digital age is in full swing.
